Editors: Incidents (of Travel) dispatch #19 from Seoul, South Korea. Narration by curator Sooyoung Leam following an itinerary set by artist Jeong Yeoreum

incidents.kadist.org

In the 19th dispatch of Incidents (of Travel), Sooyoung and Yeoreum explore Yongsan, a district at the heart of Seoul, and the conflicted territory that served as the headquarters of the Imperial Japanese Army between 1910–1945, and subsequently as a U.S. military base.

Photographed by Swan Park, their tour departs from Yeoreum’s video “Graeae” (2020), using the AR location-based mobile game Pokémon GO as a way to travel both physically and virtually. By combining the socio-political history of Yongsan with the personal and micro-history of Jeong’s everyday life, the Seoul edition offers new ways to engage with the city’s shifting symbolic landscape.

Since 2012, Incidents (of Travel) has explored the chartered day-long itinerary as a format of artistic encounter and an extended conversation between curators and artists.
