"In 1983, a Burger King opened on New York’s Governors Island, then a U.S. Coast Guard base. It was the first franchise to serve beer. After scoffing a Whopper combo, officers and enlisted men could enjoy a round of golf, play bingo, go to the movies, or throw balls at the adjacent bowling alley. In 1999, this Burger King featured in issue 615 of ‘The Amazing Spider-man’. After almost two centuries operating as a federal or military facility, the Island was vacated in 1996, and the Burger King shut up shop. The remnants were photographed in 2003 by Andrew Moore and Lisa Kereszi."

No burgers were on sale though, just wooden pretzels!

"The film that lends its image to this month’s cover story – Jordan Wolfson’s Landscape for Fire, 2007 – was featured in the Latitudes-curated film programme A Stake in the Mud, A Hole in the Reel. Land Art’s Expanded Field 1968–2008, which premiered in April 2008 at the Museo Tamayo, Mexico City, before touring several venues in Spain, Switzerland, the Netherlands and the U.K. 

Landscape for Fire responded to a 1972 film of the same name by Anthony McCall in which the British artist, best known for his “solid light” works, attempted to integrate performance, installation, sculpture and images in movement. Thirty-five years on, Jordan had re-staged this work of the past as though it were a ritual, the repetition of which invoked the almost mystical aura that often surrounds the art of the late 1960s and early 1970s." Continue reading by clicking the grey bar underneath the image

Latitudes hosts the MA Curating Contemporary Art students of the Royal College of Art in Barcelona

This morning we had an informal discussion with second-year students of the Royal College of Art's MA Curating Contemporary Art programme to present and reflect on our collaborations with three Barcelona-based artists – Martí Anson, Ignasi Aballí and Francesc Ruiz. It was an opportune moment to reconsider the old chestnut of "the artist-curator relationship" and the important role of artist advocacy and friendship in curatorial work.

Our first case study was with Martí Anson and was in the context of our participation in the 2010 iteration of 'No Soul for Sale – A Festival of Independents' at Tate Modern, coinciding with Tate's 10th anniversary. In our presentation we discussed how Martí's project "Mataró Chauffeur Service" began by the simple need for us to get to London and present our projects in the festival context, how we worked together with Martí in thinking which was the best format for the project to develop considering all the budget would have to be raised and that the invitation was limited to offering 25m2 at Tate Modern's Turbine Hall.

A year later, we invited Martí to present Joaquimandson, a project centred on researching and recuperating the fabrication of 1960s low-budget furniture designs his father produced for friends, family and clients in Mataró. A selection of the furniture was exhibited at Meessen de Clercq, Brussels, alongside works by Sarah Ortmeyer, Kasper Akhoj, Maria Loboda and Charlotte Moth


In the summer of 2009, Carol Yinghua Lu invited us to curate a new commission by Ignasi Aballí at the SUITCASE Art Project, the then project space of the Today Art Museum in Beijing. The resulting interventions in the eight display cases of the Yintai Centre, focused on absence, nothingness and invisibility, recurring concerns in Aballí's practice. A year after, we interviewed Ignasi for 'The Last Star-Ledger', the yellow issue of 'The Last Newspaper' publication we edited in the context of the New Museum show in 2010. The interview 'Rank and File' focused on his series of newspaper-cut outs from El País newspaper that he has been doing since 1997.

After a short presentation on the context of the 2009 exhibition "Sequelism part 3: Possible, Probable or Preferable Futures" at Arnolfini in Bristol, and Francesc Ruiz's stair-barrier commission, Ruiz discussed his Yayoi, Sukia and "The Green Detour" commission for Contemporary Image Collective in Cairo, and of course Francesc's weekly cartoons for the ten 'The Last Newspaper'. Here an interview with Francesc published in the third issue, 'The Last Register" and a profile of his work included in frieze magazine.

'The Last Newspaper' exhibition catalogue, New Museum, New York, 2010–11.

Lecture within the cycle "Cultural Professions", Aula de Cultura Caja Mediterráneo, Murcia, 17 October, 20h. Free.



Mariana Cánepa Luna of Latitudes will discuss the role of the curator in the context of three of Latitudes' recent projects. These case studies trace Latitudes' approach in an editorial context (The Last Newspaper, New Museum, New York (2010)); a year-long exhibition series ('Amikejo', MUSAC, León (2011)) and as an invited organisation (the two editions of No Soul for Sale: A Festival of Independents in X Initiative, New York (2009) and Tate Modern (2010)).

This cycle of monthly conferences centres on different professions within contemporary art, discussing aspects that characterise the practice of a cultural producer, a critic, a curator, a researcher and a member of an independent art space.

 The lecture "The curatorial contract: analogies and case studies" draws from popular culture and legal terminology to help define some of the ethical and professional codes at work between artists and curators. Through the editorial project 'The Last Newspaper' developed by Latitudes at the New Museum in 2010, the presentation will speculate on this relationship and how it dialogues with the public-as-participant.

Conference organised in collaboration with the Máster en Arte, Museología y Crítica Contemporáneas where on June 15, Latitudes will be visiting lecturers and discuss a range of their projects including No Soul for Sale (at X Initiative and at Tate Modern), Portscapes, Campus and Amikejo.

'Mataró Chauffeur Service' - Day 6 & 7 – Festival opened

More views of Latitudes' space at Tate Modern Turbine Hall bridge during the 3-day festival No Soul for Sale. The organisers estimated 50,000 visitors would come during that weekend, but in the end 93,000 people came through Tate.

'Mataró Chauffeur Service' - Day 5 – Opening of 'No Soul for Sale-A Festival of Independents', 14–16 May, Turbine Hall, Tate Modern

NO SOUL FOR SALE’ is an initiative of the artist Maurizio Cattelan and curators Cecilia Alemani and Massimiliano Gioni. The first edition took place in New York [40° 30’N, 45° 1’N], between 24–28 June 2009 in the former Dia Center for the Arts. Then it gathered over 30 not-for-profit organisations, artists’ collectives and independent enterprises from Reykjavík, Berlin, Milan, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Trinidad amongst others.

For the New York edition Latitudes invited the Brooklyn-based artist group The Bruce High Quality Foundation to conceive its office-scenario, which incorporated the ‘ruins’ of an abandoned 1983 Burger King facility on Governors Island. www.nosoulforsale.com

The London edition coincides with Tate Modern's 10th Anniversary celebrations. Latitudes, the only Spanish organisation, has invited Catalan artist Martí Anson (1967) to set up their temporary office. In response to the need to travel to London, Anson proposed to set up his own company, ‘Mataró Chauffeur Service’ (in honour of his home city) and drive the curatorial duo from Barcelona to London and back.

Registering his employment as a driver, designing the livery of the single vehicle fleet and his uniform, and the journey to and from Tate Modern (including the ferry sailings from Santander to Portsmouth and back) all form a part of the project. The car is parked up for the weekend alongside a ‘typically Spanish’ picnic scenario of camping chairs, table and parasol.

El evento, de carácter gratuito y abierto a todo el mundo, iniciativa del artista Maurizio Cattelan y comisariado por Cecilia Alemani y Massimiliano Gioni, llevará por nombre «No Soul for Sale. A Festival of Independents», y entre los más de sesenta espacios de arte independientes convocados (de White Columns de Nueva York a e-flux de Berlín o la Mountain School of Arts de Los Ángeles) habrá participación española, y no nos referimos a su director, Vicente Todolí.

'Mataró Chauffeur Service' – graphic identity of the project

Latitudes is soon participating in the London edition of 'No Soul for Sale – A Festival of Independents' which will take place in the Turbine Hall in Tate Modern, from 14–16 May, coinciding with the museum's 10th Anniversary celebrations.
In response to the need to travel to London, Mataró-based artist Martí Anson (1967) has proposed to set up the company “Mataró Chauffeur Service”, and drive Latitudes from Barcelona [41º 23’N, 2º 11’E] to London [51°30′N 0°7′W] and back. Legally registering his employment as a driver, designing the livery of the single vehicle fleet and his uniform, and the journey to Tate Modern and back (including the ferry journey Santander–Portsmouth) all form a part of the project.
Here we present the graphic identity of Anson's chauffeur service, designed by the artist in collaboration with Barcelona-based graphic designer and publisher ferranElOtro.

The project was briefly mentioned in Carol Vogel's article 'Inside Art' in The New York Times last Thursday (scroll down until you find the heading 'Tate Modern Free-for-All').

"...The Spanish artist Martí Anson will drive two curators, who make up the collective Latitudes, from their base in Barcelona to London by taxi and park inside Turbine Hall. “That will be their space,” Mr. Gioni said. Mr. Anson has designed the car and his chauffeur’s uniform."

Latitudes & Martí Anson, ‘NO SOUL FOR SALE – A Festival of Independents’, Turbine Hall, Tate Modern, London, 14–16 May

The Festival coincides with Tate Modern's 10th Anniversary celebrations.

Following the first edition of NO SOUL FOR SALE in June 2009 in New York [40°30′N, 45°1′N], where Latitudes invited the New York-based artist group The Bruce High Quality Foundation to conceive their office-scenario, Latitudes will produce a further specially commissioned collaboration, with Catalan artist Martí Anson (Mataró, 1967).

In response to the invitation and need to travel to London, Anson has proposed to set up a taxi firm, and drive Latitudes from Barcelona [41º 23’N, 2º 11’E] to London [51°30′29″N 0°7′29″W] and back. Legally registering his employment as a chauffeur, designing the livery of the single vehicle fleet and his uniform, and the journey to Tate Modern and back all form a part of the project.

The car itself will form the basis of Latitudes’ temporary office-encampment in the Tate Modern Turbine Hall, which will be parked up for the weekend alongside a ‘typically Spanish’ taxi-drivers’ picnic scenario of camping chairs, table, cool box and parasol. In this setting Latitudes will present ephemera, films and publications relating to their recent projects. The scenario will also serve as a meeting point for a series of informal encounters with invited artists and curators.

'No Soul For Sale – A Festival of Independents', is an initiative of the artist Maurizio Cattelan and curators Cecilia Alemani and Massimiliano Gioni. The first edition took place in New York between 24–28 June 2009 in the former Dia Center for the Arts. It gathered over 30 not-for-profit centers, alternative institutions, artists’ collectives and independent enterprises from Berlin, Milan, Dublin, Barcelona, Paris, Reykjavík, Hong Kong, Rabat, Trinidad, New York and Los Angeles, amongst others.

El festival coincide con la celebración del 10º aniversario de Tate Modern.

Latitudes ha sido invitada de nuevo a participar en el festival 'NO SOUL FOR SALE – A Festival of Independents' tras su reciente participación en la primera edición en Junio 2009 en Nueva York [40°30′N, 45°1′N], cuando invitó al grupo de artistas neoyorquino The Bruce High Quality Foundation a concebir su oficina-escenario. Para esta ocasión Latitudes ha invitado al artista catalán Martí Anson (Mataró, 1967) a producir un nuevo escenario para su presentación en la Sala de turbinas.

En respuesta a la invitación y la necesidad de viajar a Londres, Anson ha propuesto darse de alta como chofer, diseñar una identidad para una empresa de taxis y conducir a Latitudes de Barcelona [41º23’N, 2º11’E] a Londres [51°30′N, 0°7′W], y de vuelta a Barcelona. El mismo coche será la base temporal de la oficina de Latitudes en la Sala de turbinas de Tate Modern, y permanecerá estacionado durante el festival junto a un escenario 'típicamente español' realizado con mobiliario de camping. En en este campamento temporal Latitudes presentará publicaciones, videos y efímera relacionados con sus proyectos recientes y organizará reuniones informales con artistas y curadores invitados.

Appartment 22 radio interview between Latitudes and Massimiliano Gioni


During our participation last June in the X Initiative’s NO SOUL FOR SALE - Festival of Independents in New York, James Merle Thomas, a San Francisco-based team member of L’APPARTEMENT 22 from Rabat, recorded a short interview for Radio Apartment 22 between us and Massimiliano Gioni, Director of Special Exhibitions of the New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York. Gioni briefly talks about the 'introspective' (intead of retrospective) the museum dedicating to Zurich-born, New York-based artist Urs Fischer, opening 28 October.

During 'NO SOUL FOR SALE' we are presenting several publications and paraphernalia related to our projects, including:

We also have DVDs of Jan Dibbets' recent film '6 Hours of Tide Object with Correction of Perspective' (as part of Portscapes) and a public sculpture produced in October 2008 by Lawrence Weiner on occasion of his exhibition 'THE CREST OF A WAVE' at Fundació Suñol, Barcelona (we also have the exhibition booklet available).

The Bruce High Quality Foundation also have a computer available from where visitors can burn DVDs for $5 as well as some of their publications.




Latitudes' temporary office in 'NO SOUL FOR SALE' with a 'scenario' by The Bruce High Quality Foundation


Transposing our daily operations from Barcelona to New York's 22nd Street, Latitudes is presenting its recent publications, project-related paraphernalia and documentation. The office ‘scenario’ is conceived by the artist group The Bruce High Quality Foundation, incorporating dining furniture from the abandoned 1983 Burger King from Governor’s Island (see images above and below), where they have recently filmed 'Isle of the Dead'. This zombie movie about the death of culture in New York will be premiered during Creative Time’s ‘This World & Nearer Ones’ (opening June 27,2–4pm). Latitudes first collaborated with Bedford-Stuyvesant-based The Bruce High Quality Foundation for the group exhibition ‘Greenwashing. Environment: Perils, Promises and Perplexities’ (Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin, Italy, February–May 2008). Touching on themes such as gentrification and public space, satire and self-promotion, its activities have included reality TV, films, tableaux vivants, photography, protests, installations, merchandising and a production based on the musical Cats.


During NO SOUL FOR SALE we are also showing Jan Dibbets6 Hours Tide Object with
Correction of Perspective
(1969/2009) (8 mins.) as well as the 'making of' the film (20 mins). Shot in February 2009 and premiered on 14 June in Rotterdam, this Dibbets work is the inaugural project of Portscapes, the Latitudes-curated commission series taking place throughout 2009 in and around Maasvlakte 2, a 5000 acre extension to the Port of Rotterdam, The Netherlands.
