'Mataró Chauffeur Service' – graphic identity of the project

Latitudes is soon participating in the London edition of 'No Soul for Sale – A Festival of Independents' which will take place in the Turbine Hall in Tate Modern, from 14–16 May, coinciding with the museum's 10th Anniversary celebrations.
In response to the need to travel to London, Mataró-based artist Martí Anson (1967) has proposed to set up the company “Mataró Chauffeur Service”, and drive Latitudes from Barcelona [41º 23’N, 2º 11’E] to London [51°30′N 0°7′W] and back. Legally registering his employment as a driver, designing the livery of the single vehicle fleet and his uniform, and the journey to Tate Modern and back (including the ferry journey Santander–Portsmouth) all form a part of the project.
Here we present the graphic identity of Anson's chauffeur service, designed by the artist in collaboration with Barcelona-based graphic designer and publisher ferranElOtro.

We are very pleased to announce that the car has been kindly provided by BMW.
And here is our chauffeur...
And last, but certainly not least, we would like to thank the generous support of the Institut Ramon Llull, the SEACEX (Sociedad Estatal para la Acción Cultural Exterior), the Institut Municipal d'Acció Cultural of the Ajuntament de Mataró, Galeria Toni Tàpies, Barcelona, as well as thanking the in-kind-sponsorship provided by Loreak Mendian.

Poster for 'No Soul for Sale: A Festival of Independents' Turbine Hall Tate Modern, London, 14-16 May and mention in 'The New York Times' (22 April)

Above Latitudes' poster for 'No Soul for Sale' (see posters by other participants here).

The project was briefly mentioned in Carol Vogel's article 'Inside Art' in The New York Times last Thursday (scroll down until you find the heading 'Tate Modern Free-for-All').

"...The Spanish artist Martí Anson will drive two curators, who make up the collective Latitudes, from their base in Barcelona to London by taxi and park inside Turbine Hall. “That will be their space,” Mr. Gioni said. Mr. Anson has designed the car and his chauffeur’s uniform."

Anson will be give a talk on Friday 14 May, 2.30–3pm

On Monday 22 March Latitudes gave a talk about the practice of Lara Almarcegui and the project Portscapes to undergraduate students from CUArch (The Catholic University of America School of Architecture and Planning) and UTSA CoA (The University of Texas at San Antonio College of Architecture) who are spending a semester in Barcelona hosted by Collective Intelligence by Polyplicity. Collective Intelligence is "a platform that promotes collective creative thinking within a social environment that encourages dialogues, discussions, exchanges and collaborations on a local and international level within the field of architecture, design, urban studies and beyond. CI's objective is to create a learning hub in the city of Barcelona to serve as a fluid campus for foreign universities simultaneously encouraging the involvements of local students and professionals."

Latitudes & Martí Anson, ‘NO SOUL FOR SALE – A Festival of Independents’, Turbine Hall, Tate Modern, London, 14–16 May

_ENG_

The Festival coincides with Tate Modern's 10th Anniversary celebrations.

Following the first edition of NO SOUL FOR SALE in June 2009 in New York [40°30′N, 45°1′N], where Latitudes invited the New York-based artist group The Bruce High Quality Foundation to conceive their office-scenario, Latitudes will produce a further specially commissioned collaboration, with Catalan artist Martí Anson (Mataró, 1967).

In response to the invitation and need to travel to London, Anson has proposed to set up a taxi firm, and drive Latitudes from Barcelona [41º 23’N, 2º 11’E] to London [51°30′29″N 0°7′29″W] and back. Legally registering his employment as a chauffeur, designing the livery of the single vehicle fleet and his uniform, and the journey to Tate Modern and back all form a part of the project.

The car itself will form the basis of Latitudes’ temporary office-encampment in the Tate Modern Turbine Hall, which will be parked up for the weekend alongside a ‘typically Spanish’ taxi-drivers’ picnic scenario of camping chairs, table, cool box and parasol. In this setting Latitudes will present ephemera, films and publications relating to their recent projects. The scenario will also serve as a meeting point for a series of informal encounters with invited artists and curators.

Participants in this edition of NO SOUL FOR SALE (confirmed): ArtHub (Shanghai), Artists Space (New York), e-flux (Berlin), PiST (Istanbul), Latitudes (Barcelona), no.w.here (London), Loop (Seoul), The Royal Standard (Liverpool), Tranzit (Prague), VIAFARINI (Milan), White Columns (New York) and Y3K (Melbourne).

About the Artist

Martí Anson’s recent projects include ‘El preu dels colors’, Galeria Toni Tàpies, Barcelona (2009), ‘Martí et la chocolaterie’ for ‘Rendez-Vous 09’, 10th Biennale de Lyon, Lyon (2009), ‘Martí and the flour factory’ for ‘Lucky Number 7’, Site Santa Fe, Santa Fe, New Mexico (2008) ‘Fitzcarraldo, 55 days working on the construction of a Stella 34 yacht in the Centre d'Art Santa Mònica’, Centre d’Art Santa Mònica, Barcelona (2005).

Notes to Editors

'No Soul For Sale – A Festival of Independents', is an initiative of the artist Maurizio Cattelan and curators Cecilia Alemani and Massimiliano Gioni. The first edition took place in New York between 24–28 June 2009 in the former Dia Center for the Arts. It gathered over 30 not-for-profit centers, alternative institutions, artists’ collectives and independent enterprises from Berlin, Milan, Dublin, Barcelona, Paris, Reykjavík, Hong Kong, Rabat, Trinidad, New York and Los Angeles, amongst others.

Latitudes y Martí Anson en 'NO SOUL FOR SALE – A festival of Independents', Sala de turbinas, Tate Modern, Londres, 14–16 Mayo 2010

Participan en esta edición de 'NO SOUL FOR SALE' (confirmados): ArtHub (Shanghai), Artists Space (Nueva York), e-flux (Berlin), PiST (Estambul), Latitudes (Barcelona), no.w.here (Londres), Loop (Seul), The Royal Standard (Liverpool), Tranzit (Praga), VIAFARINI (Milan), White Columns (Nueva York) y Y3K (Melbourne).
