The exhibition ‘
The Last Newspaper’ took inspiration from the ways artists engage with the news – responding to headlines, stories and images that shape public discourse. Curated by Richard Flood (Director of Special Projects and Curator at Large) and Benjamin Godsill (Curatorial Associate) at the
New Museum, the exhibition invited a several partner organisations, including
Latitudes, to establish on-site offices to present their research and host public dialogues throughout the show.
‘THE LAST POST’ / ‘THE LAST GAZETTE’ / ‘THE LAST REGISTER’... was the evolving title of a 12-page, free weekly newspaper edited by
Latitudes during a ten-week editorial residency. Produced from a micro-newsroom installed on the
museum's third floor, the tabloid functioned as both a live-formed archive and an incremental exhibition catalogue. It documented
The Last Newspaper's artworks and events while also serving as a critical platform to reflect on the broader agency of art and artists in the production, organisation, reordering, and dissemination of information.
A new issue was released every Wednesday and distributed exclusively in printed format from the museum galleries: (
#1 The Last Post: 5 October (exhibition preview);
#2 The Last Gazette: 13 October;
#3 The Last Register: 20 October;
#4 The Last Star-Ledger: 27 October;
#5 The Last Monitor: 3 November;
#6 The Last Observer: 10 November;
#7 The Last Evening Sun: 17 November;
#8 The Last Journal: 24 November;

#10 The Last Express: 8 December). Select exclusive content was also published online via
Latitudes’ blog and
Facebook.
Designed by
Chad Kloepfer and
Joel Stillman, the series of tabloids ultimately formed the surrogate catalogue of
the exhibition. Featuring contributions from over 100 writers and artists—including interviews, essays, and artist pages—the compilation offered a wide-ranging exploration of the newspaper as both subject and medium, reflecting on its evolving form, function, and relevance within contemporary culture.
